Accommodation Act 2008, we suggest that student tenants should have protections under the Act just like non-student tenants. We believe that this review is an opportunity to extend legal protections to renters in student accommodation, chiefly by ending the exemption for private operators. We therefore make the following recommendations:
Recommendation one: That the exemption to the Act for student accommodation should only apply to residences that are both owned and operated by the educational provider.
Recommendation two: That the Queensland Government investigate legislative protections for renters in university-owned student accommodation.
