CAPA Media Releases

CAPA issues regular media releases on education policy. CAPA's monitoring of the higher education sector ensures it is in a position to quickly provide a media response on policy initiatives by government that affect postgraduate students. Higher Education Report Card for the 2007 Federal Election

A report card on the higher education policies of the Coalition and Labor parties released by university staff and students on Tuesday has failed the Howard Government for its record on universities.

The report card, prepared by National Tertiary Education Union, the National Union of Students and the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations, awarded Labor a pass on the basis of the well targeted but limited commitments announced during the campaign and its stated commitment to build on these in office.

The release of the Postgraduate Destinations 2006 report today by Graduate Careers Australia (GCA) highlights a discrepancy that is true of women in the workforce across the board. The OECD report Education at a Glance, also published this week, points out that women in OECD countries earn between 50% and 80% of what their male counterparts take home even with similar levels of educational attainment.

In a statement today, Nigel Palmer, National President of the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA), sought to address some mis-conceptions following from recent media reports regarding VSU.

"I think it's naive to suggest that it could be possible to come up with some kind of 'quick fix' for a problem like VSU. VSU is what happens when you ram through legislation on some obscure ideological agenda irrespective of the consequences“ and the consequences have been huge.
