Students concerned over direction of education review

CAPA is concerned by the potential for increased student fees and spiralling student debt mooted by the overview paper, Higher Education at the Crossroads, which was released by Minister Nelson today.

"CAPA is fearful that students may be perceived as the cash cows of the immediate future, providing a financial solution to the current funding crisis faced by Australian universities," said CAPA President, Ms Leisa Ridges.

The paper potentially signals a shift from public investment in higher education to students bearing the brunt of the cost.

"CAPA views education as a public good and for that reason fundamentally opposes any increase to the cost of education for Australian students," said Ms Ridges.

The overview paper considers funding options such as HECS increases, the further deregulation of fees, and the introduction of a voucher system, all of which have a huge potential impact on students.

"Universities' current problems cannot be solved without an increase in public investment," said Ms Ridges.

"I am also disappointed by the lack of student and staff representation on the Higher Education Review Reference Group," she commented.

"It is ironic that the paper criticises universities for not being responsive to the priorities and needs of students, when the review reference group lacks a student voice."

"There is potential for this review to be disproportionately influenced by the perspectives of the business community and senior university management."

"Nevertheless, CAPA welcomes the opportunity to submit a response to the overview paper and looks forward to further consultation," Ms Ridges concluded.
