Student Lives On The Improve In WA

University students in WA can look forward to vastly improved campus services and conditions, when the incoming Labor government reinstates universal membership of student associations at WA's universities.

"Western Australian university life will improve dramatically when Geoff Gallup's incoming government repeals WA's anti-student organisation legislation," CAPA President John Byron said in Sydney today.

Mr Byron's statement came following Labor's reaffirmation last week of its commitment to repealing the anti-student organisation legislation introduced by the Liberal government.

"CAPA commends the incoming administration for reaffirming its commitment to repealing this draconian legislation," said Mr Byron.

"The Student Guilds at Western Australia's universities have a superb record in representing students, in advocating for better conditions, and in providing services that make university life what it is, even under the restrictions of 'so called' VSU. With the repeal of the anti-student organisation legislation the services and conditions on offer will only improve," said CAPA Vice-President Angela Pratt.

"The swiftness of Labor's reaffirmation sends a clear signal to student organisations that the Premier-elect and his colleagues take seriously the important role they play in the life of universities in WA," she continued.

The Labor Party campaigned for the election from Opposition with a policy platform that included the commitment to the repeal of the anti-student organisation legislation.

"The sweeping victory achieved by Labor at the polls constitutes a clear mandate for repeal from the people of Western Australia," said Mr Byron.
