No Tax on Books, CAPA agrees

"The Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations welcomes the Australian Democrats' campaign to remove the GST on books, launched today by Democrats Leader Natasha Stott Despoja," CAPA President John Byron said today.

"We agree with the Australian Democrats that taxing books equates to taxing knowledge," said CAPA Vice-President Angela Pratt.

"There is little doubt that the effect of the GST on books, and on other necessary educational expenses, has been keenly felt by postgraduate students," Ms Pratt continued.

"Taxing books is yet another example of the contempt in which the Coalition government has held the importance of education, not just in universities and schools, but across the board," Mr Byron added.

"The GST on books has been one more way in which the Coalition has made it clear that education and knowledge are not valued in John Howard's Australia," Ms Pratt continued.

"We strongly endorse this move by the Democrats to remove the GST on books, and look forward to seeing Democrat parliamentarians working to remove the GST on books in the next term of federal parliament," Ms Pratt concluded.
