Stimulus Package Eligibility and Postgraduates

If you are a postgraduate scholarship holder, you may now be eligible to receive the Federal Government’s $950 Training and Learning Bonus.

The Training and Learning Bonus is available to postgraduate scholarship recipients via an administrative scheme which is different to that in place for other income support recipients (such as Youth Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY).

The Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) has today welcomed clarification of postgraduate eligibility for the Training and Learning Bonus, as part of the Federal Government’s Household Stimulus Package.

The announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard confirms eligibility for $950 bonus payments for full-time recipients of the following:

• Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA’s)
• Australian Postgraduate Awards (Industry) (APA(I)’s)

Student and university groups have welcomed the federal Government’s half billion dollar handout to students, announced as part of last week’s Nation Building and Jobs Plan. But it won’t substitute for genuine and lasting reform of student income assistance, they warn.
