Indigenous Peoples' Liaison Officer
John Browne
I am of Larrakia man from the Top End, Northern Territory. I was sent down under the National Assimilation Policy to be educated in Adelaide when I was young. I am now an Academic Adviser with the Indigenous Student Services Unit in UniSA, based at the City West Campus. My role is to provide academic counselling and to provide support to Indigenous students studying at City West Campus whether they are internal or external. At the moment I perform Justice of Peace duties for all staff and students at City West campus.
I had been involved with UniSA from time to time as a student since gaining my undergraduate degree in Social Work and was the first Indigenous person to gain this degree in 1980 as well as a Graduate Diploma in Social Science in SA.
I am currently doing my masters in Conflict Management at UniSA. In the past 30 years or so I have worked in managerial positions in Aboriginal affairs, Indigenous Health and Welfare and now Education and this has given me a good background knowledge and understanding of some of the issues that Indigenous students face when attempting to complete their post graduate studies at universities across Australia.
I am currently on the National Sorry Day Committee and President of the Journey of Healing SA (Inc) and this is my second year as President of National Indigenous Postgraduate Association Aboriginal Corporation (NIPAAC).
