Community safety of international students in Melbourne

The report presents findings of a multi-method exploratory research project implemented by ICEPA. The study draws on data gathered through an on-line survey of 1,013 international and domestic students, indepth interviews with 35 international students and interviews with 29 stakeholders from across government and non-government organisations concerned with the safety of international students.

THE truth”, says Oscar Wilde, “is rarely pure, and never simple”. This is especially true in the case of the recent spate of attacks on Indian students that are being attributed to a mix of racism and opportunism in Australia.

Most incidents of “curry bashing” (South Asians are called “curries” in Australia) are occurring in Melbourne, a sprawling cosmopolitan metropolis that is home to some 140 nationalities from the world over who speak in over 120 different languages.

About the Review

The  Hon Bruce Baird is reviewing the Education Services for Overseas Students  (ESOS) Act 2000 and he has called for feedback on Australia’s  international education sector to feed into the process that will help to  further enhance both the quality of education and protection of international  students in Australia.

Discussion Paper: International Student Representation in Australia

A Discussion Paper has been developed by the International Student Working Group set up at an International Student Forum in June hosted by the National Union of Students (NUS) and Council of Postgraduate Associations (CAPA). International student roundtable participants have also contributed to the development of the paper which discusses models for national representation for international students.

Any interested individuals or organisations are invited to make a submission or comment.

Inquiry into the migration treatment of disability

The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator the Hon Chris Evans, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children's Services, the Hon Bill Shorten, have asked the Committee to undertake an inquiry relating to the health requirement in the Migration Act.
