The CAPA Awards celebrate campaigns and other initiatives undertaken throughout the year by our affiliates. Below is a list of award winners since the inception of the CAPA Awards in 2017
1. Education Initiative of the Year
For an outstanding academically inclined campaign, program, or event run by an affiliate
2019 Winner: MUPSA, the Murdoch University Postgraduate Student Association (MUPSA) for their policy workshop series.
2018 Winner: PARSA, the ANU Postgraduate and Research Students’ Association, for their “Shut Up and Write” program for research students .
2017 Winner: GUPSA, the Griffith University Postgraduate Student Association, for their free editing service for postgraduate students.
2. Welfare Initiative of the Year
For an exceptional campaign, program, or event run by an affiliate which targets student welfare
2019 Winner: PARSA, Australian National University Postgraduate and Research Students’ Association, for their campaign on postgraduate student homelessness
2018 Winner: NUPSA, the Newcastle University Postgraduate Students’ Association , for their International Student Mentoring Initiative.
2017 Winner: NUPSA, the Newcastle University Postgraduate Students Association, for their queer research event.
3. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Initiative of the Year
NATSIPA’s award to a CAPA affiliate with a campaign, program, event, or other initiative which engages with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students or communities. This award was first awarded in 2018.
2019 Winner: MGA, Monash Graduate Association was given this award for their impeccable hosting of the 20th anniversary NATSIPA conference
2018 Winner: PARSA, the ANU Postgraduate and Research Students’ Association, for hosting the 2018 NATSIPA annual conference, providing valuable support for this important forum for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander postgraduate students nationally.
4. CAPA Citizen of the Year
For the affiliate that is most engaged with CAPA
2019 Winner: VUPA, the Victoria University Postgraduate Association, for both the improvements they made to align VUPA with best practice by becoming independent from their undergraduate union, and demonstrating support for other affiliates and leadership in collaborations to improve postgraduate representation nationally
2018 Winner: GSA, University of Melbourne Graduate Student Association for their generous support for CAPA in many ways this year, including dedicating extensive time and resources to working with CAPA on the HECS campaign, the Fares Fair PTV campaign, the income support campaign, and on internal issues such as the governance review and staffing issues. They were also been instrumental in assisting with CAPA’s operations, including by facilitating expert governance advice and sharing resources commissioned for their own governance review with CAPA so that CAPA could conduct our review at no cost.
2017 Winner: UWA Postgraduate Students’ Association, for their support of CAPA throughout the year.
5. Outstanding Event by a Small Affiliate
For a brilliant event run by an affiliate with under 7000 enrolled postgrads and/or an annual postgraduate budget of less than $50,000 per annum. This award was first award in 2019
2019 Winner: GCAP, the Gold Coast Association of Postgraduates for their ‘Cocktails in the Sky’ event.
