Coursework Postgraduates

Review of Higher Education Access and Outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People

Within Australia, there are approximately 1,500 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identifying students, constituting less than 0.5% of total postgraduate enrolment. This lies substantially below the 2.2% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation within the wider community. These students are broadly distributed across Australia’s 39 Universities and Batchelor Institute for Indigenous Tertiary Education.

Base Funding Review “in right direction”, but postgraduates lose out

The Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) welcomed today’s release of the Base Funding Review led by Professor Lomax-Smith. “The twenty-nine recommendations put forward are predominantly sound and cover a breadth of issues,” said National President John Nowakowski. “Ultimately, the Review shows that whilst the Government has been moving in the right direction, there’s still a lot more funding needed to adequately support studies nationally.”

Funding an important win for postgraduates

The Gillard government today had the first reading of the Higher Education Support Amendment (Demand Driven Funding System and Other Measures) Bill 2011, and it has a number of important wins for the sector.

“With the growing number of people attending university for tertiary education, we are glad to see the bill highlights all postgraduate coursework degrees as well” said John Nowakowski, Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations National President. “The new measures will help more students access FEE-HELP and participate in education.”

Base Funding (Lomax-Smith) Review

At CAPA's 2010 Annual Council Meeting, postgraduate representatives from across Australia engaged in a lengthy discussion to revise existing CAPA policy on the funding of higher education. We ultimately ratified the following policy principles, which have fundamentally shaped the recommendations in this submission:

Base Funding (Lomax-Smith) Review

In 2009, Australia had 813,896 domestic higher education students enrolled in higher education institutions, 197,619 (24 per cent) of whom were domestic postgraduate students. If international students are included, postgraduates make up 27 per cent of the total higher education student population, and although international students only make up 28.3 per cent of the total student population, they are 36 per cent of the postgraduate student population.

Minimum Resources for Postgraduate Study 2010

Minimum resources for postgraduate study

In 1997, the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) Published the Model Code For The Conduct Of Postgraduate Research and Statement of Minimum Resources. This was followed in 1998 by A Strategy Guide to Postgraduate Supervision including the 1998 Model Code for the Conduct of Postgraduate Research and Statement of Minimum Resources. A revised statement was again published in 2004.

CAPA's submission in response to the Strengthening the AQF Consultation Paper

The AQF Council is seeking stakeholder comments on the full package of specifications and policies as part of a strengthened AQF.

The AQF Council met on Wednesday 16 June 2010 and agreed on the package of policies that should comprise the strengthened AQF, including:

AQF Must Support a Baseline for Quality

It is vital that the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is able to effectively sustain the national and international reputation of Australian degrees.  As the current cycle of consultation on the revised AQF framework draws to a conclusion, CAPA has released a brief statement in support of the quality of Australian postgraduate degrees.
